OPEN DATA CENTER ALLIANCE SM CREATES DATA SERVICES WORKGROUP TO ACCELERATE BIG DATA AND CONTENT MANAGEMENT SOLUTION TO ENTERPRISE

New members join Open Data Center Alliance to help enterprise IT use cutting edge database solutions

PORTLAND, Ore., April 30, 2012 – – Recognizing the challenge faced by IT in managing a forecasted 6.7 times growth of data within the enterprise over the next 5 years, the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA) today announced the formation of a Data Services Workgroup chartered to document the most urgent requirements facing IT in their management of data towards competitive opportunity. The Data Services Workgroup will focus initially on big data by documenting usage model requirements towards increasing enterprise’s ability to securely collect, manage and analyze this data. Accelerating enterprise IT’s ability to use cutting edge database solutions for near real time insight into business decisions, and driving interoperability among big data frameworks and traditional business intelligence (BI) solutions will be the primary objectives of the workgroup. As part of the new charter, the Alliance will engage with big data industry leaders Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR Technologies, which have announced membership in the organization today, as well as leading data management solutions provider members, including Teradata and SAS, in matching industry delivery of open
solutions with prioritized IT requirements.

The Data Services Workgroup has multiple objectives. The workgroup will create usage models, targeted for release in the second half of 2012, to define requirements that address security, manageability and interoperability of emerging big data frameworks with traditional data management and data warehouse solutions. In part these usage models will be driven by addressing implementation within enterprise IT environments and the skill sets required to transform business intelligence solutions. Based on the usage models workgroup members will develop reference architectures and proofs of concept (POCs) for commercial distribution with independent software vendors (ISVs) and OEM partners to test deployments and establish solutions for the enterprise market. The Alliance will also collaborate with the open source community to drive
benchmarking suites.

"With the huge opportunity of big data extending across geographies and industries, the ODCA’s work will help drive interoperable standards that enhance big data frameworks to be cloud ready - from manageability to security. This will benefit ODCA's members by accelerating solution delivery,” said Denis Curran, head of strategy and innovation at National Australia Bank (NAB), and a member of the ODCA's Steering Committee. “Collaboration with such an impressive group of solutions providers will ensure we help enterprise IT adopt cloud technologies that harness big data to make good business decisions and deliver great customer outcomes."

"Through our discussions with customers, we have identified a common need for more industry best practices on when and how to implement new data solutions and what critical skill sets will be needed,” said Marvin Wheeler, chairman of the ODCA. “By working with end users directly in the ODCA we can share our experiences and start documenting tools to enable more companies to benefit from BI transformation within their enterprise."

Big data will also be one of the topics addressed at the Open Data Center Alliance Forecast 2012 event in New York City June 12. At the event members and non members will gather to discuss and debate the next steps in developing customer-based open requirements for cloud computing. All attendees will also receive a complimentary pass to International Cloud Expo as part of their ODCA Forecast 2012 registration. Early bird registration discounts for ODCA Forecast 2012 have been extended to April 30 to accommodate for late-breaking schedule updates.

  • Introduced in Dec. 2010, The Green Grid's Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE) metric addresses data center-specific carbon emissions and will be leveraged in this collaboration.
  • Initial collaboration work is targeted for completion in the first half of 2012.

SANTA CLARA, Nov.7, 2011 – Today, The Green Grid (TGG), the IT industry's leading voice for advancing resource efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems, and the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA), the leading end-user driven cloud requirements consortium, announced a strategic collaboration at Cloud Computing Expo 2011 West. Together, TGG and the ODCA will utilize TGG's IT efficiency metrics, including Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE), to align with ODCA's cloud usage model requirements to deliver resource efficient computing for industry solutions. Initial delivery of collaboration work is expected in the first half of 2012.

The initial focus of the collaboration will be to define a standard unit for measuring carbon footprint for both existing and new ODCA usage models and TGG metrics. Through the collaboration, TGG and the ODCA aim to accelerate the development of standards related to energy efficiency in the data center.

The group effort brings together the leading customer voice on cloud computing and the global authority on resource efficient data centers and business computing ecosystems. The Open Data Center Alliance, a group of 300+ companies that represent over $100B in annual IT spend, recently published the first customer-driven requirements for the cloud with release of its initial usage models. Launched in 2007, The Green Grid is a global consortium focused on driving resource efficiency in business computing by developing meaningful and user-centric metrics to help IT and facilities better manage their resources.

"The Green Grid's mission is to improve resource efficiency in business computing, which includes the impact of carbon usage as a result of cloud computing," said Tim Mohin, AMD representative and Board member of The Green Grid. "The Green Grid's efforts with the ODCA will bring much-needed efficiency metrics and resources to businesses that leverage the cloud. We're excited to see the results of this collaboration put into action and the energy savings they will generate."

"Our strategic collaboration with The Green Grid will help us gain valuable insight into standard measurement of workload carbon emissions, enabling us to report and reduce the environmental impact of data center operations," said Mario Mueller, vice president of IT Infrastructure at BMW. "Together, the ODCA and The Green Grid will drive initiatives that not only manage power efficiencies, but result in a reduced total cost of ownership. With member adoption of cloud operations forecasted to triple in the next two years, the collaboration comes at a critical point of adoption."

The two organizations expect the collaboration will yield new content and resources from each organization as well as the enhancement of existing content. To learn more about the collaboration and the organizations visit www.opendatacenteralliance.org or www.thegreengrid.org .

OPEN DATA CENTER ALLIANCE AND CLOUD SECURITY ALLIANCE JOIN FORCES TO TARGET DELIVERY OF CLOUD SECURITY EQUIVALENT TO TODAY'S LEADING ENTERPRISE PRACTICES, ACCELERATE CLOUD ADOPTION

Initial Collaboration Targeted for H1' 2012 Delivery will Align Cloud Security Best Practices with Alliance Customer Requirements

NEW YORK, Nov. 3, 2011 – The Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA) and Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) announced a strategic collaboration today which will accelerate industry standard delivery of cloud solutions to meet customer requirements for broad cloud computing implementation. Initial collaboration focus will align ODCA Cloud Service Provider Assurance and Monitoring requirements with CSA best practices and collaborate on cloud security certification training and testing. Initial results from the collaboration are targeted for the first half of 2012.

Security concerns are frequently recognized as the largest barrier against more broad cloud adoption. A newly released survey of ODCA members found that security concerns top all challenges identified by members as the largest obstacle to implementing cloud solutions. The collaboration between the leading industry minds on cloud security, with leading enterprise and cloud service providers, will focus the organizations on the most pressing security challenges facing cloud adoption. The ODCA estimates that industry standard solution delivery of targeted customer requirements will help accelerate over $50B in cloud investment in the next three years.

"Our membership has consistently cited security as a leading challenge for adoption of cloud computing," said Denis McGee, National Australia Bank general manager, application development and testing. "By connecting customer requirement definitions from Alliance security usage models with cloud best practices developed by the CSA, we can help accelerate work by both organizations as well as deliver aligned definitions of security innovation targets to the industry."

Initial collaboration engagements include alignment of the ODCA's Cloud Security Assurance and Monitoring usage models with CSA's Cloud Audit specification and STAR (Security, Trust, and Registry) program. Initial results of these engagements are expected to be delivered in Q1 2012 and will assist cloud service providers in standard definitions for delivery of ODCA requirements enabling delivery of solutions next year.

"As cloud adoption continues at a rapid pace, we welcome this alignment of ODCA's customer definitions with our best-practices," said Jim Reavis, co-founder and Executive Director of the CSA. "In addition, we believe certification is a crucial step in growing awareness and implementation of these best-practices among organizations. We are very pleased that ODCA members will be participating in our CCSK certification program, driving deeper understanding and adoption of these best-practices within their organizations."

The organizations also announced the ODCA's participation in CSA's CCSK (Certification of Cloud Security Knowledge) program including ODCA representation on CSA's certification board and ODCA member participation in certification testing. Collaboration on knowledge certification will help ensure enterprise requirements are aligned with CSA certification targets, raising the quality of the program. More information about ODCA usage models, CSA specifications, and organization collaboration can be received at the upcoming CSA Congress, November 16-17 in Orlando, Florida as well as at organization websites www.opendatacenteralliance.org and www.cloudsecurityalliance.org.
